The learners are from other provinces and it’s their first-time registering at schools. WCED spokesperson Bronagh Hammond says the province experiences growth in pupil numbers every year which is a challenge for the department as it requires building, staffing, and furnishing of approximately 18 to 20 schools every year.

Meanwhile, the Department of Basic Education has said it will not oppose an urgent court application challenging its decision to stop the practice of publishing matric results on media platforms. The court is delivering judgement on this matter today, after 2 organizations applied to the court, to overturn the department’s decision, not to publish.
