Proteas vs India – Day 1 Wrap

Published on

Proteas captain Dean Elgar will be pleased with the performance of his bowlers on Day 1 of the final match in their series with India. However, will be disappointed with his little cameo with the bat.

It was Virat Kohli who won the toss this morning and chose to have a bat first. A decision that almost immediately came back to haunt him, as both their openers were sent packing within 13-overs. The Indian captain showed real grit to keep his team in the match, but his partners fell like flies around him. Kohli tried his best to hold on but was eventually sent packing by Kagiso Rabada for 79 (201).

While the paceman leads the bowling attack with figures of 4 for 73 in 22-overs, he was supported by his cohorts. Marco Jansen brags with figures of 3 for 55 in 15 overs, while Ngidi, Olivier and Maharaj all made it into the wickets column, taking one a-piece.

The South Africans started their first innings with about 35 minutes left in the day. Unfortunately, Dean Elgar had to take to the long walk back to the dressing room just 5 overs in. Jasprit Bumrah getting the early breakthrough with Cheteshwar Pujuara taking a comfortable catch at second slip.

17 for 1 the score when stumps were called. Aiden Markram on 8 (20) and Keshav Maharaj on 6 (12).

Play on Day 2 will get underway at 10h00 on Wednesday (12 January 2022).
