The Health Minister says the country had no choice but to alert the world to the new variant discovered in Southern Africa.

South Africa has been criticised for announcing the discovery of the Omicron variant of Covid-19. After the announcement, South Africa and neighbouring countries were placed on red lists and travellers were denied entry into numerous countries. Minister Joe Phaahla says health authorities have a duty to report variants.
