Objections from two political parties have forced the IEC to recount some votes in the Cape Metro which could affect the seat allocation in the City Council.

The Cape Independence Party has argued that because the abbreviation for their party was CIP in stead of “CAPEXIT”, in at least 12 voting districts, votes could have mean misallocated. The DA has also objected to the vote count in Avondale, Atlantis and Mamre forcing a recount there. The IEC has confirmed that these recounts will take place today and could affect the seat allocation of councillors in the City Council.

Meanwhile: The majority of councillors elected in the 2021 municipal elections are under the age of 50, with the youngest being just 20 years old. The Electoral Commission of South Africa has gazetted the names and final seat allocations for the elections. A total of 63% of all councillors are male. Of the 325 political parties which contested the elections, 167 managed to secure a seat in a council. The 213 municipal councils now have 14 days to hold their first meeting.
