The SA National Commission for UNESCO says men have a slightly higher literacy level than women in the country.

People in urban areas are also more literate than their counterparts in rural communities. These are some of the reading challenges in the country. Chairperson of the Commission, Prof Ihron Rensburg says South Africa has partnered with other organizations to help address this issue. Meanwhile, the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga says they will launch a programme, later this month, to upskill teachers, which will also help to boost literacy levels.
