Abdool Karim says people are currently being vaccinated for protection against serious illness issues and death. The Pfizer vaccine offers 95% protection, which means 1 in 20 people will still get symptoms. The Johnson & Johnson vaccine offers 64% protection, which means that 1 in 3 people will present symptoms. The fourth wave will see fewer deaths and hospitalizations. This will ease the pressure on the health care system. Meanwhile, the chairperson of the ministerial advisory committee on Covid-19 vaccines, Prof. Barry Schoub, says the fourth wave is expected in December.
