A new study has shown that South African sugarcane producers would be able to produce more than 430-million litres of sustainable aviation fuel per year.
The study, commissioned under the Sugar Industry Value Chain Masterplan, has shown that by diverting 50% of the 19-million tons of locally-produced sugarcane, the industry could, annually, produce approximately 700-million litres of low-carbon ethanol.
Chairman of SA Canegrowers Association, Rex Talmage says the fuel can then be converted into millions of litres of sustainable aviation fuel, which can be supplied to the local and international aviation industry.
Talmage says this would also help boost the profitability of sugarcane farms.
