The Western Cape Health Department has kicked off Phase 2 of its vaccination campaign at the Brooklyn Chest Hospital yesterday, and one of the first elderly citizens receiving the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine was Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu.

Tutu and his wife Leah were part of a group of elderly citizens at the hospital in Milnerton, one of the designated provincial vaccination sites. The Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation has called on citizens over the age of 60, who have not yet signed up for the jab, to do so urgently. Meanwhile, Premier Alan Winde says people WILL be contacted with the next steps, ONCE they’ve registered.

The initial 7 public-facing sites are the Brooklyn Chest, Helderberg, Mitchells’ Plain, Khayelitsha and Karl Bremer Hospitals, as well as the Brackenfell and Albow Gardens Clinics. However, if you have not received a phone call or an SMS indicating where you must go, you should NOT go to a vaccination site. The plan is to eventually have 70 Metro and 204 Rural sites in the public sector on stream and to complete vaccinations of those 60 years and older by the end of June. Over 400 sites in the private sector will also eventually be able to vaccinate.
