Dept. of Health monitoring spread of the B.1.617-variant of Covid-19

Published on

The Department of Health says it is closely monitoring the situation in India and will be keeping a close eye on any travelers arriving from the region, to avoid a resurgence of Covid-19 infections here in South Africa.

This, after fears that Covid-19 positive patients from India might travel to South Africa, which could lead to the B.1.617-variant of the virus, currently dominant in India, reaching the country.

India has over the past 7 days recorded more than 300-thousand new infections and more than 3-thousand Covid-19 fatalities on a daily basis.

Health Minister, Zweli Mkhize urged South Africans to remain calm and says the situation is under control.

He says the variant has not yet been detected in South Africa.
