Sisonke-trial resumes (with a slight change) today

The country’s Sisonke Vaccination Programme resumes today, with one slight change.

Director of Communications at Western Cape Government Health, Marika Champion says healthcare workers who want to be vaccinated will, from today, be required to be informed of the possibility of developing blood-clots after receiving their injection.

Champion says the use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine was temporarily suspended, about 2 weeks ago, after a small percentage (6 out of more than 6 million people) of participants in overseas vaccination programmes suffered an extremely rare clotting disorder.

Phase 1 of the vaccination-porogramme will run until 16 may this year. Phase 2, focusing on the vaccination of all people over the age of 60, is set to kick off on 17 May 2021.
