WATCH: South Africa to receive 30 million locally produced J&J vaccine doses in 2021, starting in April

Johnson & Johnson is to supply at least 220 million doses of its single-shot COVID-19 vaccine to the African Union’s 55 member states from the third quarter of 2021, after an agreement was reached with the African Vaccine Acquisition Trust.

The Trust could order an additional 180 million doses, through the course of 2022.

The announcement comes as President Cyril Ramaphosa visits the Aspen Pharmacare factory in the Eastern Cape, where the J&J vaccines are being manufactured.

Speaking earlier, Aspen Pharmacare’s chief executive, Stephen Saad, confirmed South Africa is set to receive 30 million doses of the J&J vaccine, starting in April this year.
