The National Institute of Communicable Diseases says there was a 12.25% decrease in daily Covid-19 cases yesterday when the country reported 12 267 new cases. South Africa reported a record number of infections at the end of December, after which it reported a new record number of 21 980 in one day on 8 January.

There are currently 202 380 active corona-virus cases in South Africa, with the most active cases occurring in KwaZulu-Natal, more than 64 000 cases, Gauteng, more than 45 000 & the Western Cape, more than 40 000. North West (13 652) and the Free State (10 064) are the only other provinces with more than 10 000 active cases. The death toll is at 37 105.

The SA Human Rights Commission says it has launched an investigation after reports that a person died due to a heart attack at one of the SASSA contact offices in Cape Town. Police and law enforcement were called to assist with crowd control and compliance at the Gugulethu, Bellville and Eersterivier offices last week, with the SAHRC condemning the use of a water cannon on beneficiaries outside the Bellville office.
