Health minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says in the latest monitoring period, 712 Covid-19 related fatalities have been recorded in the past 24 hours. This comes after 806 deaths were announced on Wednesday, and 755 deaths on Tuesday. This means that 2 273 people have been confirmed to have died from Covid-19 related illnesses in just three days. Mkhize says 18 503 new Covid-19 infections have been recorded in the past 24 hours. Meanwhile, the recovery rate is 80,9%.

The South African Medical Research Council says the country has recorded its highest single week increase in the number of deaths. The latest Medical Research Council report on the number of deaths showed that from 30 December 2020 to 5 January this year, 20 063 deaths were recorded.
