US Vice President Mike Pence says he does not support invoking the 25th Amendment to remove President Donald Trump just a week before the end of his term, saying such a move is not in the country’s “best interest”. The vice president is crucial to the process because under the 25th Amendment, Pence and the majority of Trump’s cabinet would need to declare Trump unable to perform the duties of the presidency and install Pence as acting president.

Health minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says 755 people have died due to covid-19 related illnesses, in the latest 24-hour period. Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi has temporarily suspended certain critical services, including applications for new IDs and passports. Only matriculants may apply for an ID, while passport applications will only be accepted from those who are allowed to travel under the amended regulations. Motsoaledi says the suspension was forced by the increasing number of employees who have tested positive for Covid-19.
