New restrictions for South Africans over the festive season

Published on

President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that the Sarah Baartman and Garden Route district municipalities have been declared Covid-19 hotspots, and will be subjected to the same restrictions as the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro.

Beaches and parks will be closed to the public from 16 December – 3 January for the entire Eastern Cape and the Garden Route.

Beaches in KZN will be closed on 16th, 25th, 26th, 31st, and 1-3 Jan.

In addition, the size of gatherings nationally will be reduced to 100 people indoors and 250 people outdoors.

All gatherings must include adequate ventilation, social distancing, wearing of masks and provision of hand-sanitiser. Due to the potential for transmission, all post-funeral gatherings, including ‘after-tears’ parties, are prohibited.

Alcohol sales nationwide will be limited to Monday-Thursday 10am-6pm.

A new national curfew will be in place from 11pm-4am. Restaurants and bars will have to close at 10pm to allow people to make their way home before curfew.

The festive season restrictions will be reviewed in January.
