20% more ATMs blown up in 2020

The number of ATMs in the country, which were blown up with explosives, rose by 20% last year, compared to the previous year.

In 2020, 214 ATMs were blown up, while in 2019, 178 ATMs were destroyed.

According to the South African Banking Risk Information Center, the first year of the covid-19 pandemic showed unusually high crime-figures.

SABRIC says while some types of crime have decreased, other crimes have shown an increase, with criminals exploiting the pandemic.

Incidents of cybercrime increased by 33%, from more than 26-thousand to more than 35-thousand cases.

The monetary loss, due to cybercrime, increased by R1.2m to more than R309m.
