A student at the University of Stellenbosch has been found dead in his dorm room.
The 19-year-old’s body was found on Saturday, after the management at his residence reportedly raised concern about not having seen him for some time.
The deceased, who has been identified as Chris Scheffers, was part of the Dagbreek Men’s Residence along Victoria Street in Stellenbosch.
Western Cape police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed that Scheffers was found lying on his back on his bed, already deceased.
“On [officers’] arrival they were escorted by security personnel to a room on the second floor, where they found the body of an unknown male lying on his back on the bed. All his personal property remained in place, untouched.”
Van Wyk noted that the circumstances of the incident are still under investigation, but no foul play is suspected.
Meanwhile, a post-mortem is being conducted to determine the cause of his death.
Die Burger said Scheffers lived in Riebeek West, before moving to Stellenbosch to pursue his studies in theology.
Speaking to the Afrikaans news outlet, Stellenbosch University’s acting vice-chancellor for learning and teaching, Professor Richard Stevens, expressed deep sorrow.
“It is with heavy hearts that we mourn with the family and friends.”
