Former eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede, a well-known supporter of the former president, has been elected eThekwini chairperson, defeating her rival, council speaker Thabani Nyawose. Gumede, who was not present for the election due to the ANC’s step-aside rule, has received 210 votes while Nyawose, a supporter of president Cyril Ramaphosa’s anti-corruption campaign received 181.
