Your small yoghurt tub can help to build classrooms, in impoverished areas.

Published on

A food company has launched a campaign called the Tubs2Classrooms project. The initiative aims to get learners at schools to recycle yoghurt tubs so that the tubs can be converted into bricks. NutriDay will also set out to educate 80 identified primary schools about responsible plastic recycling.

Corporate Affairs Manager at Danone Southern Africa, Leanne Kiezer says it’s important that children learn about packaging and recycling. Meanwhile, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment has expressed its support for the campaign.

“What better way to prove that waste has value than to convert used yoghurt tubs into bricks to build much-needed classrooms,” says Minister Barbara Creecy.

Minister Creecy added “the achievement of a circular economy is directly reliant on the collaboration between the government and the private sector. ”

“The DFFE would like to extend its support and appreciation for the waste beneficiation efforts. Spurred on by the new regulations, companies are committed to designing packaging for recyclability and encouraging recycling,” Creecy added.
