You’ll soon be able to visit a refurbished Muizenberg beachfront area. The City says the current refurbishment of various areas at the beach is progressing well. One of the areas being upgraded could be opened to the public by 1 August 2025.

Andrews said, ‘I’ve been informed that the pre-casting of the concrete components for the main promenade has started.”

Soon, there’ll be a refurbished Muizenberg beachfront area

The Executive Support Officer to the Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Jason Love, says workers are currently busy with the construction of the coastal revetment at the start of the St James walkway. At the same time, the stormwater pipeline at Surfer’s Corner has been realigned and is now being installed. He says the contractor has also started with the layer work at the western parking area. This affects the parking area on the beach side, in front of the Muizenberg Civic Centre. This could be opened to the public by 1 August 2025.

If all goes as planned, the parking area on the beachside, in front of the Muizenberg Civic Centre (centre), will be open to the public by 1 August.

‘Working in the tidal and wave run-up zone adds to the complexity of this project, especially during winter when we often experience storm events, high winds and strong wave action,” he elaborated.

Major upgrades to public amenities

The City’s Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Andrews, says the refurbishment of the Muizenberg beachfront entails major upgrades to public amenities.

It will also see to the replacement of aged seawalls. He says this forms part of the City’s investment in popular beachfront areas to mitigate the impact of climate change on the beachfront. Andrews says it’s also to improve the quality of infrastructure in the area.

Information is key

At the same time, the City is advising community members of another community liaison meeting about the Muizenberg Beachfront Refurbishment Project.

The details are as follows:

Date: Tuesday, 17 June 2025
Time: 17:30 to 19:00
Venue: The Lookout, Promenade Road, Zandvlei, Muizenberg

He said, “As for the parking area on the eastern side, in front of the Muizenberg Civic Centre, work is progressing well despite a minor setback.”

In phases over two years

According to him, the project is being implemented in phases over two years. Andrews says the first phase started in February this year on the western side of Surfers’ Corner, next to the railway line. This is where the informal gravel parking area has been closed to the public.
