Western Cape still free from foot-and-mouth disease

Published on

The DA in the Western Cape has applauded the provincial government for its strict animal-health safety and control measures which have prevented foot-and-mouth disease from reaching the province.

The DA’s spokesperson on Agriculture, Andricus van der Westhuizen says officials from the provincial department of Agriculture have been continuously conducting inspections at roadblocks, and checking livestock for symptoms.

He says strict measures are also followed at livestock auctions to keep the disease at bay.

He says foot-and-mouth disease is a severe and highly infectious disease.

It has caused enormous losses in the past and has recently spread to a number of provinces.

Visits are also conducted at livestock auctions to ensure that stringent biosecurity measures are adhered to.

The provincial Agriculture Department is also working with other provinces, the National Directorate of Animal Health, and relevant stakeholders to maintain FMD-free areas through a comprehensive livestock movement policy.
