Alleged Wellington xenophobia: Boland Police are still on the scene

Published on

Boland Police are still on the scene following alleged xenophobia in Wellington.
Almost 2 000 foreign nationals fled their homes in Wellington yesterday following threats of xenophobic violence. This stemmed from a fatal brawl between a local resident and a foreigner.
Meanwhile, the intervention of the humanitarian aid organisation Gift of the Givers and the South African Police Service has led to people, returning to their homes.

Gift of the Givers’ spokesperson Ali Sablay says the area is calm. Tensions have meanwhile eased in Wellington, but police are still keeping a watchful eye on the situation to quell any form of incident that could be xenophobia related.

Sablay says community leaders in Wellington, including elderly groupings and the taxi industry have urged local residents not to stoke tensions in Wellington.

Close to 2 000 foreigners, including women and children, were housed in a hall, under police guard, yesterday, following a threat of violence.
Gift of the Givers says it has been assisting with aid in the community after initial reports emerged of foreign nationals fleeing Wellington, due to xenophobic threats. Sablay says foreigners have returned to their homes.
