A man is expected to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Monday after he was caught on camera vandalising at least one car at the Kloofnek parking area of Table Mountain.
The suspect was filmed shattering the windscreen of a BMW with a chair on Saturday.
The video was shared on the Take Back Our Mountains Facebook page, prompting police intervention.
The man, who appeared drunk, will face two cases of malicious property damage.
Police spokesperson, FC van Wyk, confirmed the matter:
“According to reports, a person who seemed to be under the influence of alcohol damaged the windows of vehicles at Signal Hill, Kloofnek Road, Cape Town. The adult person was arrested and detained at Cape Town Central SAPS.”
SANParks Head of Communication JP Louw says the incident was reported via WhatsApp.
Also over the weekend, two robbery incidents were reported on the Pipe Track and Deer Park hiking trails in the Northern Section of Table Mountain National Park, resulting in one victim getting injured by five suspects.
The suspects are at large and are still being pursued.
Meanwhile, two suspects were searched near Military Road and detained for outstanding cases.
Louw says to continue its fight against crime, SANParks started implementing a Safety and Awareness Campaign in collaboration with the South African Police Service, City of Cape Town Metro Police, SANParks Honorary Rangers, Working on Fire, SANParks Volunteers and neighbourhood watch groups.
Part of the safety and security strategy over the festive season includes raising awareness about preventative measures that can enhance the safety of all who visit this iconic national park.
“SANParks urges park users to exercise caution and to enjoy their outdoor activities between sunrise and sunset. Please follow our visitor safety tips and save our emergency number in your phone before heading out: Table Mountain National Park Emergency Number 086 110 6417 and Wilderness Search and Rescue Number 021 937 0300, or simply dial 112.”
SANParks recently launched its safety measures for the festive season.
Louw says as part of the safety strategy, there will be a big focus on technology, dedicated K9 units and aerial support to fight and curb crime.
