Cape Town police officers arrested a 43-year-old man in Muizenberg on Monday afternoon, following a high-speed chase that started in Wynberg.

According to police reports, it is alleged that the suspect drove recklessly in his Volkswagen Polo when Metro Police officers spotted him on Church Street, Wynberg. The officers, who were on patrol in the area, attempted to pull him over, but the driver refused.

Additional reinforcements were then allegedly summoned, and after a high-speed chase against the flow of traffic, the members finally pulled the suspect over in Muizenberg.

Videos of the chase have since been widely shared on social media.

In a statement, Police Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie said that during the chase, shots were fired at the vehicle’s tyres in an attempt to force the driver to a halt at the traffic circle at Sunrise Circle.

Pojie says the suspect was arrested and taken to a medical facility for assessment and treatment for a laceration to the head, where he was detained.

Muizenberg police registered cases related to Reckless and Negligent Driving, Possession of Drugs, Malicious Injury to Property and Resisting Arrest. The suspect will appear in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court once charged.
