South African retailer, Checkers, has taken its grocery delivery service, Sixty60, to new heights — literally. In a collaboration with award-winning airline, LIFT, the retailer unveiled a specially branded Airbus A320.

The aircraft is adorned with its Sixty60 logo on the sides and “Checkers” on the belly.

The plane was first spotted at OR Tambo International Airport on Thursday,  ahead of its maiden flight to Cape Town. This marks a unique addition to the company’s growing roster of brand innovations.

LIFT’s teal Airbus, with the registration number ZS-GAS, will continue to operate scheduled flights between Johannesburg, Durban, and Cape Town throughout the summer. Aviation enthusiasts and fans of the iconic South African brand can track the aircraft’s movements online.

“This festive season, Checkers will be adding something extra special to its offering, bringing beloved family members together,” the company teased in a press statement, encouraging customers to “watch this space” for more details.

Shoprite Holdings has launched this aerial spectacle as the latest in a series of playful innovations.

The retailer’s Sixty60 brand has also recently introduced limited-edition pop-in charms that capture the fun spirit of the delivery service. Available in packs of five, these charms feature miniatures of the Sixty60 driver, motorbike, and the iconic paper bag. It allows customers to personalise everything from shoes and bags to pet collars.

The exclusive charms are available for R39.99 on the Checkers Sixty60 app until 28 October and in selected Checkers stores from 29 October, while stocks last.
