The Western Cape Government has urged vigilance under those who will be on the roads over the next few days, as an increase in travel is expected. The increase in travel on roads goes hand-in-hand with the Festive Season drawing to a close.

Vigilance is urged as increased travel is expected on Provincial Roads

The Western Cape Mobility Minister Isaac Sileku has urged road users, especially public transport providers and pedestrians, to be vigilant and patient and to strictly adhere to road rules. He says by taking personal responsibility, respecting speed limits, and remaining courteous toward others on the road, every traveller can contribute to safer journeys for all.

Mobility MEC Isaac Sileku says, “No matter how eager you are to get home, be even more committed to demonstrating patience and good driver behaviour.”

He added that Provincial Traffic Officers and their law enforcement partners have worked tirelessly throughout the year, but especially at this time of the year to ensure safer roads, for all. Sileku says their traffic teams are on the roads 24/7 to ensure the safety of everyone using roads, and he added, that real change begins with each of us.

Western Cape Government Urges Vigilance on Roads as Festive Season Draws to a Close

The Minister also shared some statistics about Traffic Operations between 30 December 2024 and 5 January 2025. MEC Sileku says more than 29,000 vehicles were stopped at roadblocks, and vehicle checkpoints across the province, as well as during speed control operations.

During the mentioned operations:
“191 speeding offences were recorded;
“25 vehicles were impounded; and
“117 arrests were made, 83 of which were for driving under the influence of alcohol.

 

Mobility MEC Isaac Sileku added, “Nobody plans an accident. Let us make these last few days of the festive season just as memorable as the start, by ensuring we arrive safely home.”

Make road safety the lasting gift of this festive season

MEC Sileku has at the same time, emphasised to road users that a collective responsibility is needed to ensure safety on our roads. He further warned road users not to drink and drive, to manage fatigue on long trips and to perform safety checks on their vehicles before departure.

He says officials remain steadfast in their commitment to road safety and Sileku urged all travellers to exercise caution and embrace responsible driving practices. The Minister has called on road users to make road safety the lasting gift of this festive season.
