Vegan industry roleplayers say the government’s attempt, to stop vegan products from using words such as burger, sausage or nuggets, is confusing, and will have a negative impact on vegan brands and their consumers. The government issued a notice last month, ordering plant-based food producers to rename products that refer to meat in their names, or it will be seized and destroyed. However, on Friday, the industry obtained an interdict against the Department of Agriculture and the Food Safety Agency, which prevents them from seizing fake meat products, from retail outlets. PRO VEG South Africa’s director Donovan Will says government alleges current vegan labelling misleads customers, but there is no evidence of that.
