UPDATE: 5 people dead following fatal N2 accident near Heidelberg

UPDATE – 8 JULY 2026: Heidelberg Police have confirmed that the death toll in Tuesday’s fatal accident on the N2 highway outside Heidelberg has risen to five.

 

This comes after two victims, who sustained serious injuries on the scene, succumbed to their injuries in hospital.

 

Three people died on the scene after a minibus and an SUV collided just outside Heidelberg. The two occupants sustained multiple injuries and were taken to hospitals in Cape Town and Riversdale.

 

A 13-year-old girl succumbed to her injuries in hospital in Riversdale on Tuesday night, and the 20-year-old man died in Cape Town on Wednesday morning.

 

Ten occupants of the bus sustained serious injuries.

 

Police opened a culpable homicide docket for further investigation.

REPORT – 7 JULY 2026: The Heidelberg Police have confirmed that they are investigating a case of culpable homicide following a fatal accident along the N2 highway on Tuesday that left 3 people dead and 14 others injured.

 

According to police, preliminary reports from the scene suggest that a minibus, which was travelling towards Swellendam, collided with an SUV on the N2 highway between Heidelberg and Riversdale.

 

Warrant Officer Christopher Spies says emergency personnel responded to the accident at about 09:30.

 

“The vehicles collided head on and three occupants sustained multiple injuries. They were later declared dead by medical personnel.” added Spies

 

According to police, a number of people sustained serious injuries and whey were transported to nearby medical facilities.

 

 

Meanwhile, Western Cape Mobility Chief Director Traffic Management, Maxine Bezuidenhout, urged road users to exercise patience and follow traffic officials’ instructions as the road was closed to motorists following the accident.

 

Bezuidenhout says emergency services were on scene, providing medical assistance and managing the incident.

 

At the time, the N2 was closed to traffic and motorists travelling in the area were advised to use the detour via the Slangrivier turn-off towards Heidelberg.

 

Spies says investigations into the matter continue.
