Published on

Police investigations continue following the fatal drowning of a woman at Clifton’s Second Beach on Sunday. According to the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), the lifeless body of the adult female (believed to be in her 50’s) was discovered in the water, off-shore of Clifton on Sunday morning.

The circumstances surrounding her cause of death are still unknown and remain under investigation.

In a statement, the NSRI explained that a group of local open-water swimmers noticed a woman face down in the water.

“They are commended for swiftly rescuing the lady to the shoreline and raising the alarm.”

Following the discovery, the Good Samaritan rescuers promptly initiated CPR efforts and were soon joined by a doctor who happened to be at the beach.

Upon arrival, paramedics continued advanced life support CPR, with assistance from the off-duty doctor. Despite exhaustive efforts, the woman was sadly declared deceased.

While it appears the woman was swimming at the time, police are conducting an investigation, and an Inquest docket has been opened.

Formal identification of the woman is underway, in collaboration with the police and Forensic Pathology Services.

The SA Police Services and NSRI, in cooperation with the City of Cape Town, are urgently appealing to anyone who can assist to identify or provide information as to contact details for family, to come forward. The woman is described as a white adult female (believed to be in her 50s), wearing a floral 2 piece bathing suit, a yellow bathing cap and purple Speedo swimming goggles.

Contact Camps Bay Police Station at 021 4378140 or NSRI Communications at 0823803800.

“Condolences are extended to the family and friends of the deceased woman.” – NSRI
