Tyla’s Water goes platinum

The year has kicked off on a high note for Grammy-nominated pop star, Tyla – who’s hit single, Water, has gone platinum.

As of yesterday, the song has sold over one million copies, earning a platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America. The hit single has previously received triple platinum certifications in South Africa, it’s also been certified multi-platinum in Brazil. The song gained further certifications in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland – all platinum. Water further received gold certification in the UK, France, Portugal, Norway, Denmark, Netherlands, Sweden, Greece, Turkey and Belgium.

Meanwhile, the hit song currently sits at the seventh spot on the Billboard Top 100.

Luzuko Moyikweni, of Sony Music Africa, aptly described Water as a “massive global hit in every sense of the term”.

The 21-year-old not only achieved major milestones in her career in a seemingly short space of time, but the singer has instead dominated the past year. And this year seems no different for the amapiano and pop star.

With all the heat and sweat that went into Water the singer was nominated for her very first Grammy – in the category of Best African Music Performance. Her performances on VEVO’s DSCVR, The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and several other shows across the United States has certainly prepared Tyla for pop super-stardom – along with the possibility of many more award nominations throughout this year.

Fans of the singer are not only waiting in anticipation for her possible-Grammy win, they are also waiting for the release of her debut album.  Water is the third song on her album, titled after her stage name, Tyla. The album is due for release on 1 March 2024.
