Two new fires were reported in the Cape Winelands district

Published on

Two new fires were reported in the Cape Winelands district early this morning in Wolseley and Franschhoek, while firefighters are also actively monitoring three other blazes, which have since been contained. Meanwhile, the blazes in Montagu/Ashton, De Doorns and along the N1 at Du Toitskloof Pass have officially been contained.

However, monitoring will continue in those areas. Teams from the Cape Winelands District Municipality’s (CWDM) Fire Services, together with partners CapeNature and the Winelands FPA, are actively involved in the firefighting efforts.

The spokesperson for the Cape Winelands District Municipality, Jo-Anne Otto, says this blaze began between Rawsonville and Wolseley. She says fire crews, assisted by local farmers, were able to guide the fire, which was fanned by strong winds, away from infrastructure and back into the veld. She says that with first light, teams proceeded with the planned management of this fire.

At the same time, Otto added that a second fire had ignited in the veld above the informal settlement outside Groendal. She says crews responded promptly. For now, this blaze is moving very slowly. Otto elaborated that the area ahead of the fire line burned in January and now offers limited fuel. She says this increases the likelihood that the fire will burn itself out. Otto said on the opposite flank that teams from CapeNature continue also, with active suppression efforts.

“The CWDM extends sincere thanks to all partners, volunteer fire organisations, contracted services, community members, and, above all, the farmers and agri-workers whose assistance and cooperation remain invaluable.”
