Two men killed at a funeral in Ravensmead

A man and his alleged killer were killed while laying a man to rest in Ravensmead this weekend.  The double murder occurred on Saturday when a father attending his son’s funeral was gunned down, and the alleged shooter was killed in an alleged act of mob justice.

The incident, which took place in the Beverley Court area, has left the community in shock, with local policing forums condemning the escalating violence.

According to police, the initial incident occurred at around 08:45, when a 54-year-old man was shot in the back of the head. Spokesperson, Captain Frederick Van Wyk, says this incident is believed to be gang-related.

Shortly after, the suspected gunman, a 26-year-old man, attempted to flee the scene.

“The suspect then ran away but was chased and apprehended by the community who attended the funeral and was beaten to death… Ravensmead [SAPS] registered two separate murder cases,” said Van Wyk.

The Ravensmead Community Policing Forum (CPF) expressed deep concern over the incident. The CPF’s Lucian Davids said the incident was captured on video, and circulated on social media over the weekend.

Davids says the CPF has strongly condemned the incident.

“Historically, this is the first incident of this nature and as Ravensmead CPF we condemn in the strongest terms this terrible precedent. It is an unspeakable act to do while someone is being laid to rest.”

Davids further emphasised the increasing insecurity in the area, warning that crime is pushing communities to act outside legal bounds.

“This does not inspire confidence with families, crime is creeping much closer to our personal spaces and creates conditions where the community is forced to act outside of legal bounds.”

The CPF called on police to act swiftly and decisively on this incident, to prevent further escalation of violence. Meanwhile, authorities have urged anyone with information to contact Ravensmead police or Crime Stop, with information that could assist the investigations.
