Two City Law Enforcement Officers Arrested for Kidnapping and Extortion

Published on

Two Law Enforcement officers have been arrested on charges of kidnapping and extortion, following an internal investigation by the City of Cape Town’s Safety and Security Investigations Unit (SSIU).

According to the City, the officers, who were assigned to the Metal Theft Unit, allegedly kidnapped two men in Khayelitsha and demanded a ransom for their release.

The arrests came after the SSIU received a tip-off and launched a preliminary inquiry. The matter was then escalated to the South African Police Service (SAPS), who worked with the SSIU to secure search warrants.

The arrests were carried out on Monday in a joint operation with the SAPS Provincial Kidnapping and Extortion Task Team.

“The City takes a dim view of any dishonesty or illegal behaviour by its staff,” a spokesperson said. “We are cooperating fully with SAPS to ensure a swift and thorough investigation and prosecution.”

In addition to the criminal investigation, the City has confirmed that disciplinary proceedings are underway in accordance with its internal policies and procedures.

The Safety and Security Directorate has reiterated its commitment to rooting out corruption within its ranks.

“We will not hesitate to investigate and act against any staff members involved in wrongdoing,” City management said.

The case remains under investigation.
