The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate has advised motorists of lane closures and traffic changes that are set to be implemented along Govan Mbeki Road and at the Wetton Circle this week.

This is to allow construction work on the City’s MyCiTi transport infrastructure project to continue.

On Tuesday, 28 October 2025, an urgent temporary lane closure will be put in place between the Wetton Circle and the Jan Smuts Drive intersection. According to the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Rob Quintas, this additional lane closure is to accommodate the urgent relocation of underground municipal services.

Quintas has urged motorists and other road users to take note of the following traffic changes to be implemented:

  • Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction between Wetton Circle and Low Road to accommodate the urgent relocation of underground municipal services.
  • Traffic will be accommodated on two lanes in each direction between Low Road and the intersection with Jan Smuts Drive.

“The works will regrettably add to congestion, but we ask that you always keep in mind the safe, affordable and reliable MyCiTi bus service that is coming your way, the public transport option we have all been waiting for along this corridor,’ said Quintas

Additionally, a lane closure is also planned from Thursday, 30 October 2025, between the Duinefontein Bridge and the intersections with Link Road. According to Quintas, this closure will be in place for the next 13 months.

Residents and all road users are to take note of the following traffic changes to be implemented:

  • Traffic will be diverted at the Duinefontein Bridge to drive on the westbound lane (towards Manenberg) while construction is underway on the eastbound lane (towards the R300)
  • Only one lane in each direction along Govan Mbeki will be open to accommodate traffic

Quintas has appealed to all the residents and road users who travel in this area to be patient with the MyCiTi Phase 2A construction work that needs to take place, adding that it will contribute to congestion.

“We will ensure that clear traffic signage is installed to guide road users through the area, but ask that road users please plan for longer journey times, if possible,” added Quintas
