Tournament Overview

Published on

As we look ahead to the 2019 Cricket World Cup, let’s take a look at the format for this year.

It is only the 2nd time that the World Cup will feature 10 teams, down from the usual 14.

It’s also only the 2nd time after the 1992 edition that a single group round robin format will be followed.

During the opening rounds, the 10 participating teams will each play 9 matches.

For locals all eyes will be on the Proteas, who get the tournament underway against England on 30 May.

South Africa next plays Bangladesh on the 2nd of June, followed by India on the 5th, the West Indies on the 10th, Afghanistan on the 15th, New Zealand on the 19th, Pakistan on the 23rd of June and Sri Lanka on the 28th.

Our final ODI will be against Australia on the 6th of July.

Once the round robin is completed the top 4 sides head to the semifinals.

During the tournament 11 pitches will be used which includes world famous grounds such as The Oval, and Lords where the opening match and the final will be played, respectively.
