A Lavender Hill pool player says she will be jetting off to China on Saturday, where she stands the chance to win R12,5 million.

21-year-old Shaiyene Fritz has been playing pool since the age of 9. She recently struck gold, by winning in the women’s category of the Blackball World Championships, held in Morocco in November.

Fritz has been battling to raise the R40 000 needed for her trip, but says an anonymous donor gifted her with R15 000 recently, which largely contributed to making this trip possible.

“I just want to thank everyone who has donated, everyone who supported me this time around. Can you believe it? I received an anonymous donation of R15 000 in my bank account. I’ve been looking for this person. I have no idea who this person is,” says Fritz.

She will board her flight at 13h30 on Saturday, and will return on the 5 April.

“My ticket is fully paid. My visa has been collected, and I have about 3 quarters of my accommodation money, but that’s so much more than what I could have asked for. I’m just glad that I am going. Three more sleeps!” says an excited Fritz.

At this stage, the young woman says she still requires an additional R7 000. The money will be used towards covering the costs of her accommodation and meals.

“I don’t care if I have to pack in 2-minute noodles. I am still going,” adds Fritz.

The Stellenbosch University education student maintains that her winnings will be used to transform her community, and get her mother out of Lavender Hill.
