Three suspects appeared in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 29 July, on charges of attempted murder, kidnapping, and abduction – following a dramatic early-morning arrest over the weekend.

At around 5:30 on Sunday morning, 27 July, a vigilant Metro Police officer noticed a minibus taxi speeding through a red light at the intersection of Jakes Gerwel Drive and Morgenster Road in Mitchells Plain.

What began as a routine traffic stop quickly escalated into something else.

As the officer engaged with the driver, a blood-soaked man suddenly leapt from the vehicle and collapsed on the roadside.

The driver hastily claimed that the man had broken into his home, but the officer, sensing something was off, immediately handcuffed him and called for backup.

Before help could arrive, two more men stepped out of the taxi – their hands stained with blood. The officer ordered them to remain inside the vehicle until his backup arrived.

The three suspects, aged 23, 24 and 27, were taken into custody at Mitchells Plain SAPS. The injured man was rushed to the hospital for treatment. His condition has not yet been confirmed.

Today, the trio made their first court appearance and were remanded in custody. They are expected to apply for bail next week, as investigators piece together the full story behind the bloodied encounter.
