This comes as the province begins preparations for the fifth wave of infections, likely to take place in winter. Western Cape health department head Dr Keith Cloete says the province will only exit the fourth wave once it reaches an average of less than 600 daily cases based on the seven-day moving average. Currently, the province has been recording an average of 2 013 new Covid-19 diagnoses per day.
Meanwhile, Premier Alan Winde says the ongoing extension of the National Disaster Management Act is having a negative impact on the long-term development of learners. He says the education system cannot operate at full capacity, while this act is in place. 88% of the province’s primary schools are not able to fully go back because of the declaration and the one-metre rule, which he says should be scrapped.
