The South African police service says it will destroy up to 15-thousand firearms over the next few months.

The firearms were handed over or forfeited to police during the country’s arms amnesty period, which came to an end earlier this year.

The amnesty began in December 2019 and ended in January 2021.

The Police says nearly 100-thousand firearms were handed over during the period.

Up to 400-thousand rounds of ammunition were also forfeited.

Earlier this year, SAPS destroyed more than 35-thousand firearms.
