The rules, allowing licence exemptions for the generation and operation of 100MW of electricity, have been gazetted.

Mineral Resources and Energy Minister, Gwede Mantashe has gazetted the regulations, earlier today.

Amendments to schedule 2 of the Electricity Regulation Act, which enable the change, were published today.

President Cyril Ramaphosa in June announced that the licensing regulations would be lifted from 1MW to 100MW in a bid to boost the country’s energy security.

Ramaphosa said the additional energy supply would help reduce the burden on Eskom.
