The Omicron variant of Covid-19 has been reported in the sewage systems of both the Cape Town and Nelson Mandela Bay metros.

The SA Medical Research Council says the new variant was found in 11 of the 12 samples of waste-water taken in the Cape Town metro’s sewage treatment plants on 30 November.

The variant was also found in four samples taken in Nelson Mandela Bay.

The SAMRC says the Delta variant is however still the dominant variant picked up in the sewage systems.
