Gungubele says the aim of introducing the passport is to encourage more South Africans to get vaccinated.

Meanwhile, South Africa has recorded 4 667 new cases of covid-19, in the last 24 hours. This represents a 9.6% positivity rate. A further 166 related deaths have been confirmed, taking total fatalities to over 85 400.
Further afield: The AU’s special envoy for Covid-19, Strive Masiyiwa says global partners and sponsors have promised to, as soon as possible, deliver at least 50% of the required doses of covid-19 needed, to vaccinate 60% of the African population. The announcement follows engagements with the WTO, the WHO and other partners, with the majority of the doses to reach African countries through the COVAX-facility.
