The fallout from poor mental health is having a negative impact on productivity and workplace well-being, at a time when companies can least afford it.
That’s according to the Choose Life Specialist Recovery Centre’s Jared Elliot. This comes as the number of those suffering from anxiety, depression, burnout and addiction continues to rise. Elliot says South Africans are having to contend with several blows, such as job cuts, rolling blackouts, the ever-rising cost of living and more.
“Companies are legally required to assist with treatment. They cannot dismiss a staff member who is dealing with depression, anxiety or addiction. Also, many employers are also unaware that medical aids cover treatment of mental health problems,” says Elliot.
THE COST OF AILING MENTAL HEALTH
Health economists are estimating that mental health conditions are costing the economy a staggering R161 billion a year.
Elliot says companies can invest in the staffers by restoring a work-life balance, and by supporting workers who are struggling.
“Organisations such as ours are well-positioned to support companies. This is to put the correct policies in place, to train their staff to identify problems and support workers,” concludes Elliot.
