The man who murdered police officers sentenced to life

The man who murdered two police officers in Kraaifontein in 2021 has been sentenced to life in prison. Sergeant Mnakwazo Mdoko and Constable Mninawa Breakfast were on patrol in Nondakuthini Street, Bloebkombos, in the early morning hours of 28 February 2021 when the suspect ambushed them.

A Warrant Officer for the Hawks, Zinzi Hani, says the 44- and 32-year-old officers were fatally shot while in their official vehicle, while on patrol. She says Mdoko and Breakfast were declared dead on the scene, and their official firearms were stolen.

36-year-old to spend life behind bars

 

The Hawks says 36-year-old Mxoleleni Sikhahla was yesterday, 19 June 2025, sentenced to two life sentences for killing the two officers. Additionally, he was handed 47 years’ direct imprisonment for other related offences. This includes robbery, illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. Hani says Sikhahla was found guilty on 13 June 2025, on nine (9) of ten (10) charges he faced in the Western Cape High Court.

 

Sikhahla was sentenced as follows:

 

Count 1

Murder of a SAPS member. Sentenced to life imprisonment

Count 2

Murder of a SAPS member. Sentenced to life imprisonment

Count 4

Robbery with aggravating circumstances. Sentenced to fifteen (15) years’ direct imprisonment

Count 5

Unlawful possession of a firearm. Sentenced to five (5) years’ direct imprisonment

Count 6

Unlawful possession of ammunition. Sentenced to five (5) years’ direct imprisonment

Count 7

Possession of a prohibited firearm. Sentenced to four (4) years’ direct imprisonment

Count 8

Possession of a prohibited firearm. Sentenced to four (4) years’ direct imprisonment

Count 9

Possession of a prohibited firearm. Sentenced to four (4) years’ direct imprisonment

Count 10

Contravening section 90 read with section 1,103,117,120,121 and schedule 4 of the Firearms Control Act, Act 60 of 2000. Sentenced to ten (10) years’ direct imprisonment.

Count 3: attempted murder. The accused was found not guilty

The court ordered that the sentences imposed on counts 2 and 4 to 10 will run concurrently with the sentence imposed in count 1.

Sikhahla will effectively serve life imprisonment.

Additionally, the accused was declared unfit to possess a firearm.
