The Department of Correctional Services says former President Jacob Zuma has been placed on medical parole and will be released soon.

Published on

The department says apart from being terminally ill and physically incapacitated, inmates suffering from an illness that severely limits their daily activity or self-care can also be considered for this special parole. Zuma’s medical parole means that he will complete the remainder of the sentence in the system of community corrections.

Meanwhile, the DA is going to challenge the medical parole granted to the former president. Leader John Steenhuisen has threatened to submit an application in terms of the Promotion of Access to Information Act for the records of the parole board that granted Zuma parole. The opposition party has labelled the medical parole granted to Zuma as unlawful and a mockery of the Correctional Matters Amendment Act.

At the same time, it’s being reported that embattled prisons boss Arthur Fraser signed off on Zuma’s medical parole just 2 weeks before his contract is set to expire. News24 has learnt that Fraser’s contract as Correctional Services National Commissioner is set to expire on the 25th, and his contract will not be renewed.
