Teen suffers neck injuries after assault at school

Published on

Police are investigating a case of assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm after a teenager was attacked at a school in Kraaifontein.

A 14-year-old boy from Northpine Technical High School was allegedly rushed to hospital after the attack last Friday.

According to reports, his grade 8 class was involved in a game that required them to not make a peep while the teacher was not present.

While the whole class kept quiet, the 14-year-old was hit with an elastic band which led to him making a sound.

It is believed that a group of 5 boys immediately attacked the Grade 8 teen, with one of them jumping onto the boy. The 14-year-old fell off his chair and hit his head against a desk which severely injured his neck.

The teen was then rushed to hospital where he had to be fed through a tube due to his neck injuries.

The South African Police Service says they have received a case at Durbanville SAPS and investigations into the matter are ongoing.

No arrests have been made yet, but according to the Western Cape Education Department (WCED), the learners involved in the incident have been suspended. The learners are also being questioned by the police.

WCED spokesperson, Bronagh Hammond says an investigation has been done by the school and a disciplinary hearing will also resume.

“The school acted immediately and provided the necessary support to the learner” added Hammond

The school has allegedly been in contact with the parent of the injured teen and has arranged for counselling support to be made available for the learner.

“The school is cooperating with the police who is conducting an investigation”
