A high level investigation is underway after 95 Libyan nationals, who were allegedly receiving military training, were arrested at a farm in White River, Mpumalanga.

National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola welcomed the intelligence driven operation that led to the takedown operation on Friday morning.

A multidisciplinary team, including detectives and specialised units within the SAPS, were involved.

Following up information that suspicious activities were taking place on the farm, detectives found the Libyan nationals housed in military tents. Military training equipment was also found including licensed firearms.

The farm is reportedly accredited as a security training site, but the SAPS says it cannot rule out that the site was being utilised as an illegal military training camp.

The Department of Home Affairs is now working to determine under what circumstances the 95 foreign nationals obtained visas to enter South Africa.

General Masemola has called for calm and says he has full confidence in the team that is working on this cases.

“During the takedown operation, police also found dagga and cocaine. Some of the other drugs found in their posssesion are being sent to the SAPS Forensic Science Laboratory in Pretoria to identify them as illegal substances. The safety and security of our citizens is of paramount importance and the SAPS remains committed to dealing decisively with transnational organised crime.”

While the investigation is underway, the Acting Provincial Police Commissioner in Mpumalanga, Zeph Mkhwanazi has assured the public that there is no immediate threat to community safety.

“We take any threat to the security and stability of our province and country very seriously,” said Mkhwanazi.

“This operation demonstrates our commitment to acting swiftly and decisively against any activities that could undermine our national interests and ensure the safety of our citizens because that is our primary mandate.”

The discovery of the alleged secret military training camp raises further questions about South Africa’s border and national security.

This just days after the US Treasury Department announced sanctions against two alleged ISIS agents in South Africa, Abubakar Swallehnand Zayd Gangat.

Police also discovered a massive meth lab in Groblersdal this week where five suspects, including three Mexican nationals, were arrested.
