The City of Cape Town says it will no longer tolerate attacks on its staff. This statement follows after a video made the rounds on social media, in which a suspect was involved in a heated confrontation with a traffic officer on the N1 outbound onto Durban Road Bridge on Monday.

In the video it is clear that the driver acts aggressively when approached by the traffic officer.

The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith says the driver was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless and negligent driving and assault. He was detained at Bellville SAPS.

“The officer stopped the driver and interviewed him, but the driver became aggressive and failed to comply with the officer’s instructions. SAPS and Law Enforcement officers arrived to provide assistance. No one was injured during the incident,” Smith said.

Smith says the suspect should face the full might of the law to ensure that crime of this nature does not take place within the City.

Smith says the City’s staff work incredibly hard, and under very trying circumstances, to ensure law and order prevail, and to protect communities.

“For them to be disrespected and targeted in this manner is completely unacceptable. We hope that the suspect is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, to help send the message that such actions will not be tolerated”.
