Statistics South Africa says the country lost more than 80-thousand formal jobs in the second quarter of 2021.

According to the latest Quarterly Employment Statistics Survey, 86-thousand jobs were lost in the formal, non-agricultural sector between the first and second quarter.

Employment in this segment now stands at 9,57-million.

By the end of June this year, there were 60-thousand more people employed than in June 2020, when South Africa started to emerge from a hard lockdown.

Compared to the first quarter, employment in community services, manufacturing and construction saw the biggest declines.

But the mining sector employed 2 000 more people, and the transport industry increased employment by 1 000.
