ICYMI: Road closures and Free MyCiTi shuttle for Springbok vs All Blacks clash

Published on

As the country braces for an epic showdown between the Springboks and the All Blacks on 7 September 2024, the City of Cape Town has finalised its preparations for the clash.

This highly anticipated match marks the Springboks’ return to the city for the first time since their victorious match against Wales in 2022, and their first encounter with the All Blacks in Cape Town since 2017.

As such, a sold-out crowd of 52,000 people are expected to fill the DHL stadium to capacity on Saturday.

In preparation for the influx of fans, the City has announced a range of transportation and parking measures to ensure a smooth experience for all attendees.

“Cape Town is a city united in pride and excitement as we prepare to host our world champion Bokke for this historic clash against our greatest rivals. To support this major event, the City is pleased to announce an expanded and free MyCiTi shuttle service for spectators,” said Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.

The MyCiti service will run from various locations, including Century City, UCT, CTICC, Thibault Square, and Civic Centre stations, beginning at 12:00 on the day of the match. It will run until 16:45, just before kick-off. The last bus leaves the stadium at 21:30.

Fans are encouraged to make use of public transport and the newly announced shuttle services to ease traffic congestion.

For attendees opting out of public transport, 475 parking bays will be available for free from 11:00 at the Civic Centre. The Century City Steelbridge E-Parking will offer 500 parking bays on a first-come, first-served basis. On-street parking in the CBD is available for free from 13:00.

“With the game sold out, we anticipate our roads will be congested on match day but working with the event organiser, we have provided alternatives to single-occupancy vehicles. We would like to encourage spectators to make use of the park and ride system to alleviate the pressure on the roads,” said JP Smith, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security.

Illegally parked vehicles will be subject to a fine or being towed.

A dedicated E-Hailing area will also be available, and located on P13 in Greenpoint Main Road between York Road and Wigtown Road.
